there is a way of viewing conversations around ai in the classroom as really distilling into conversations around control and power and the ways in which we ultimately signal those messages to students.
on the one hand, we want students to feel empowered to make their own choices around process and around the tools they use, and around authentic engagement with the ideas in our classes. on the other hand, it seems we often only want them to make those choices so long as they align those of the school or the instructor.
what would it look like, in a non-trivial way, to really allow agency around student engagement in class? what would happen if it doesn’t look the way i want it to?
